What Does a Legal Videographer Do?

The role of a legal videographer

A legal videographer is a professional who records legal proceedings — depositions, examinations, inspections, and other litigation-related events — to standards that make the recording clear, accurate, and usable as part of the legal record. The work is part technical craft and part legal discipline: the recording has to look and sound professional, and it has to be handled in a way that respects the rules and rhythm of a legal proceeding.

What the videographer actually does

Before the proceeding, the videographer sets up professional cameras, microphones, and lighting and confirms the logistics. During the proceeding, they monitor audio and video levels continuously, manage the record without disrupting the examination, and time-code the recording. Afterward, they deliver a clean master and any requested edits, synchronizations, or formats.

Why it is a specialty

Legal videography is not event videography. The videographer works in a legal environment, understands the language attorneys use, and knows that the recording may be played for a jury or used in settlement. A specialist anticipates what the attorneys need and handles the record accordingly.
